Bespoke Sideboard - Man Shed Challenger series No.1

Every now and then we get a piece of furniture in our stores that for some reason just likes to hang around!

This could be for many reasons but most likely it’s because it just needs a little tender, love and care!

So we decided to put this theory to the test.

CEO Michael Bertram challenged Jamsheed, our employed Carpenter who leads the Men’s Shed project to pick an item from one of our stores that he believes he could transform in to a stunning modern feature piece for any home.

Jamsheed, over-joyed with the task found this sideboard on sale at our Middlesbrough branch and although already stunning in it’s own right and probably has a thousand stories to tell already, he believed this was the perfect piece for the challenge.

He could identify that the previous owner must have felt the same, as they too had given the piece a new lease of life at some point.

Jamsheed inspected the item to spot any obvious flaws that needed attending to, his findings were:

Stiff Drawers that are difficult to open and close

Chipped and worn paint

Dirty

General wear and tear from use

With a clear idea of key areas to concentrate on the first thing Jamsheed knew he wanted to achieve right off the bat was to expose the beautiful Pine Wood that lay underneath this now dull Blue Paint.

He set to work sanding down the entire Sideboard, removing all the old paint and treating the Wood.

This whole process took weeks to complete but Jamsheed wanted to make sure it was done right!

During this time FRADE had become a member of “Community Re-Paint” who take donations of Paint from large manufacturers such as “Dulux” and sell them on to charities like ourselves, so we can pass on the savings of high quality paint at a fraction of the cost to the communities we serve.

More to come on “Community Re-Paint” in the coming weeks.

Now with a range of high quality paint in various different colours at his disposal, Jamsheed needed to decide on the perfect colour Paint for this item.

He decided on a soft Peach colour from our range of chalk Paints (available to purchase at the “Community Emporium” and “FRADE- Darlington” store) he knew this colour in particular would bring out some light subtleties that would contrast beautifully and amplify the Pine Wood effect.

We can’t stress enough how beautiful the Pine is!

So after many weeks of hard graft, blood, sweat and all the rest of it we now have this stunning, contemporary sideboard finished and ready to be displayed in the Men’s Shed very own store front “Community Emporium” which held a soft opening back in March, the community store will be open to the public for people who wish to purchase bespoke or upcycled pieces produced by the Men’s Shed.

We don’t think this will hang around much longer, we’re very pleased with the finished product and we hope you are too!

We think Jamsheed nailed this challenge, keep an eye out for future projects and challenges.
